The constant pressure to make decisions, motivate teams, and meet deadlines can easily push personal time aside. For leaders recovering from a workplace injury, this challenge becomes even greater. But maintaining a healthy work-life balance is crucial for both personal well-being and effective leadership—particularly during recovery.

Without balance, stress, burnout, and decreased productivity can take a toll on your healing process and your ability to lead effectively. Leaders who fail to prioritize their well-being may struggle to perform at their best, which in turn affects their ability to inspire their teams. However, when leaders successfully balance recovery with their professional and personal lives, they become more energized, focused, and able to guide their teams through challenges.

Achieving this balance requires intentional effort. Set clear boundaries, prioritize rest and recovery, and make time for personal activities that support your healing process. Lead by example, showing your team the importance of self-care, resilience, and maintaining a balanced lifestyle.

Ultimately, the best leaders understand that their personal well-being directly impacts their professional success. A healthy, balanced leader is more effective in decision-making, fosters a culture of trust and engagement, and can better support their team. By investing in your recovery and overall well-being, you're not only strengthening your leadership but also creating an environment where both you and your team can thrive.

If you're ready to make a real difference in your career and the lives of those around you, now is the perfect time to take the first step. Whether you're recovering from an injury, refining your leadership skills, or simply seeking more balance in your life, it's never too late to start.

Take action today to begin your journey toward becoming the empowered, balanced leader you aspire to be. They are the ones with the degrees and the titles, after all. But behind the scenes, there’s another group of professionals whose presence is just as vital to the healing process—Mental Health Technicians (MHTs). They are the steady, compassionate hands that offer support in times of need, often working around the clock with little recognition.

If you’ve ever wondered what a Mental Health Technician actually does, or why they matter so much in the bigger picture of mental health care, you're not alone. Many people don’t fully understand the scope of the role. So, let’s dive into a more personal look at this incredible and often unheralded job.

What Exactly Does a Mental Health Technician Do?

At its core, the job of an MHT is to support individuals who are struggling with mental health issues—whether that’s through a mental health crisis, a long-term condition like schizophrenia, or everyday emotional struggles like depression or anxiety. But the role is so much more than just "watching over" patients. MHTs are caregivers, listeners, helpers, and sometimes even lifelines for those in their care.

They work in psychiatric hospitals, residential treatment centers, inpatient mental health wards, and even community-based settings. Their day-to-day responsibilities can vary, but there are some constants: providing hands-on care, being a listening ear, ensuring patients take their medications, and being alert to any behavioral changes or emotional crises.

A Day in the Life of an MHT

For many MHTs, no two days are exactly the same. Every patient is unique, and every moment offers something different. In this blog post, I’ll give you a snapshot of what a typical day might look like.

Morning: The Calm Before the Storm

The shift often starts early with a handoff from the night shift. During this brief but essential exchange, the MHT learns about the night’s events: any incidents, changes in a patient’s behavior, or upcoming appointments. This is the time to get up to speed and mentally prepare for the day ahead.

One of the first tasks might be to assist patients with basic needs. Some patients need help getting out of bed, showering, or preparing breakfast, while others may need encouragement to get dressed or join a group activity. For many patients, these tasks are more than just physical—they’re emotional hurdles they need to overcome. And that's where MHTs come in. They aren’t just there to help with logistics—they’re there to offer support and comfort.

A warm greeting, a gentle word of encouragement, or just a calm presence can make all the difference in someone’s day.

Mid-Morning: Building Relationships and Providing Support

The first few hours of the day might be spent monitoring patients during their group therapy sessions or individual activities. As an MHT, you may facilitate group discussions, help patients feel comfortable in their interactions, and ensure that the environment stays calm and safe. It’s not just about “watching over” people—it’s about connecting with them. For patients who are often socially isolated or fearful, that connection can be a lifeline.

Many of these patients are in a vulnerable place emotionally, and the MHT is often the person they turn to when they need someone to talk to. It’s not always about offering solutions—sometimes it’s just being there, listening without judgment, and offering a bit of reassurance.

One of the most important parts of the MHT’s role is observing. Watching for any subtle signs that a patient might be struggling emotionally—maybe they’re withdrawing, their mood is shifting, or they’re acting out in some way. Mental health is complicated, and the ability to catch those early signs of distress or escalation can be crucial.

Afternoon: Crisis Management and Routine Care

By the afternoon, the pace can pick up. Some patients may experience emotional outbursts, panic attacks, or moments of heightened agitation. When this happens, it’s up to the MHT to help de-escalate the situation with calm and compassion. It can be stressful, and there’s often a lot on the line, but MHTs are trained to manage these moments safely.

Of course, not all afternoons are filled with crises. Many MHTs will spend their time during the afternoon administering medications, helping patients complete daily activities, or simply chatting with patients who need a friendly ear. It’s a chance to connect on a more personal level, even if the conversation is as simple as talking about hobbies or interests. These small moments can help patients feel seen, heard, and understood.

Evening: Wrapping Up and Reflecting

As the day winds down, MHTs typically conduct one final round of checks to ensure all the patients are settled, medications are administered, and the environment is secure. For patients who are preparing for bed, it might mean offering a bit of extra comfort, ensuring they feel safe and supported as they go to sleep.

At the end of the shift, MHTs participate in another handoff, providing the next shift with updates on the day’s events, patient moods, and any changes in behavior that might need attention. It’s a quiet moment to reflect on the day’s challenges and victories—sometimes a patient has made significant progress, or perhaps there’s been a breakthrough in communication. These are the moments that matter, and they make all the hard work worthwhile.

Why MHTs Are So Essential

Mental health care is complex, and every patient’s journey is different. Doctors, nurses, and therapists all play critical roles in treatment, but the MHT is often the person who interacts with the patient the most on a day-to-day basis. They’re the ones who witness the subtle shifts in behavior, the ones who can tell when a patient needs a little extra encouragement or when something’s off.

For many patients, the MHT is a constant presence—a trusted figure who provides safety, structure, and, perhaps most importantly, human connection. Patients with mental health conditions often feel isolated and misunderstood, and having someone to talk to can make all the difference. MHTs help bridge the gap between clinical treatment and the emotional care that is just as vital to recovery.

Mental health technicians don’t just "work the floor." They make sure patients feel seen, they handle emergencies with grace, and they keep things running smoothly when everything feels chaotic. They make the healing process feel a little less intimidating and a lot more human.

It’s More Than Just a Job – It’s a Calling

Becoming a Mental Health Technician isn’t just about clocking in and clocking out. It’s about answering a call to serve those who need help. Mental health conditions are often invisible, and the stigma surrounding them can make it even harder for those who are struggling to reach out for help. By becoming an MHT, you’re stepping up to break down those barriers and provide the compassionate care that so many people desperately need.

This is a career that requires more than just technical knowledge—it requires emotional intelligence, a genuine desire to help, and a deep well of compassion. But it’s also a career that offers personal growth, a sense of purpose, and the satisfaction of knowing you’ve made a tangible difference in the world.

The Personal Rewards

It’s not an easy job, and it can be emotionally taxing. The hours can be long, the work physically demanding, and dealing with patients in crisis can be tough. But for those who choose this profession, the rewards are often deeply personal.

For some, it’s the satisfaction of knowing that they've helped someone through a tough moment, whether it’s a patient who made it through a difficult therapy session or one who was able to get a good night’s sleep after a stressful day. For others, it’s the connection they build with patients—helping them regain their sense of self-worth or seeing a patient take a step forward in their recovery.

In the end, being an MHT is about being there when it counts. It’s about offering compassion when it feels like the world has forgotten, and it’s about showing up, day in and day out, to support people who need it most. It's a job that requires a lot of heart, but for many MHTs, it's the most fulfilling kind of work there is.

Ready to Make an Impact?

If you’re ready to help people, make a real difference in their lives, and join a growing field that is both rewarding and essential, then it’s time to consider enrolling in an online Mental Health Technician course. This is your opportunity to take the first step toward a career that allows you to offer the care and compassion that so many individuals desperately need.

By becoming an MHT, you’ll not only change lives—you’ll change your own.

So, why wait? You get to create beautiful dishes, bring people together through food, and experience the joy of seeing others enjoy your work. But while cooking is undoubtedly a passion, it’s also a career that requires hard work, long hours, and a lot of energy.
In this blog post, I’ll share what it’s like to be a professional cook and caterer, how I’ve learned to balance my job with personal time, and why it’s all worth it.

Early Mornings and Busy Days

A typical day for a cook or caterer starts early. Whether you’re prepping for a big catering event or getting the kitchen ready for lunch service at a restaurant, there’s a lot to do before the day really begins. It’s not always easy to get up at the crack of dawn, but if you love what you do, the early mornings become part of the rhythm of the job.

The rest of the day is a mix of cooking, organizing, and making sure everything is in place for the event or service. For caterers, this means preparing large quantities of food, carefully packing it for transport, and setting up the venue for the event. In a restaurant, it’s about managing the kitchen, making sure orders are coming out fast, and ensuring each dish looks and tastes perfect.

Loving the Work, but Needing Time for Yourself

The work can be intense, especially when you’re catering for a wedding with hundreds of guests or managing a busy restaurant service. The adrenaline is real, and there’s a thrill in seeing everything come together. But over time, I’ve learned that it’s important to step back and recharge.

If you don’t make time for yourself, it’s easy to get burned out. That’s why I make a conscious effort to prioritize downtime—even if it’s just a quiet evening at home or a walk in the park. Taking care of yourself physically and mentally means you can continue to give your best in the kitchen.

Family and Friends Matter, Too

One of the biggest challenges in this job is making time for the people who matter most. The hours can be long, and work can often spill into weekends and holidays. But family and friends are important, and I’ve learned to be more intentional about spending time with them.

Whether it’s cooking a meal together, taking a weekend trip, or just relaxing with a loved one after a busy week, I try to find balance by setting boundaries—both with my work and in my personal life. Saying “no” to extra gigs when I’m already booked is sometimes necessary so I can stay present with the people I care about.

The Joy of Creating

Despite the challenges, there’s something truly special about cooking and catering. It’s not just about the food—it’s about the experience. The creativity that comes with designing a new menu or crafting a beautiful dish is what keeps me going. And when people enjoy your food, it’s an incredible feeling of accomplishment.

The ability to share my passion for food with others, whether it’s a private dinner or a large event, makes all the hard work worth it. Plus, seeing a room full of happy guests enjoying a meal you created? There’s no better feeling.

Finding Your Balance

The life of a professional cook and caterer is full of excitement, creativity, and hard work. But the key to success is balance. Loving your job doesn’t mean you have to work nonstop. By setting boundaries, making time for yourself, and prioritizing relationships, it’s possible to thrive in this career while still having a fulfilling personal life.

If you’re thinking about diving into the world of cooking and catering, remember this: It’s okay to work hard, but it’s also important to rest, recharge, and enjoy life outside the kitchen. The best cooks are the ones who bring their best selves to the table—both at work and at home.

Are You Ready to Answer the Call?

Experiment with natural and artificial lighting to see how it transforms your subject.

        • Tell a Story: Think about what you want your image to convey. A good photograph often tells a story or evokes a specific feeling.

One of the most rewarding aspects of photography is sharing your work with others. There is always something new to learn, a technique to master, or a perspective to explore. So grab your camera, step outside, and let the world become your canvas. With every click of the shutter, you’re not just capturing an image—you’re creating art.

Happy shooting!

While the past cannot be changed, you might be wondering what steps you can take now and who can best assist you with your future.

What is an advocate? According to the Northern Pain Centre website (northernpaincentre.com.au), pacing aims to avoid the "boom and bust" cycle and minimize overdoing things on the good days ("boom"), which leads to underdoing things on the bad days ("bust"). Those with work-related injuries can quickly fall into this cycle of overdoing when they feel good, but soon those feel-good days become fewer and less often, potentially leading to more damage.

Pacing may reduce flare-ups, frustration, fatigue, and reliance on medication. This means that it can have a positive effect on an injured worker’s mood and recovery. It gives the workers a chance to assess their current state and capabilities, as well as identify their limitations and areas for improvement without experiencing “booms and busts.” Keep in mind that pacing techniques can be applied to the classroom as well. World Education's flexible online training allows for participation that works on your terms, not the other way around.

Ultimately, pacing fosters a more sustainable and balanced approach to rehabilitation and daily activity. For those navigating recovery, considering pacing can be a proactive step towards a more manageable and resilient path to healing.

There is no way to truly prepare for a work-related injury when it happens to you. Unfortunately, the bad news doesn’t end there. All the things that come along with it can be overwhelming, like dealing with the workman’s comp process; or the physical, mental, emotional toll a person endures along the way. Yes, there is a little booklet that gives you some helpful basic information, but it just isn't enough. Most people think, “a work injury won’t happen to me” or maybe haven’t thought about it at all. But when it does happen, your new reality becomes a jumbled puzzle that you have to put back together on your own. One piece at a time. You’ll find yourself moving pieces around to try to make them fit, without knowing what the final picture is going to look like.

I was first injured at work in 2018 and then experienced two additional injuries in 2020 (a very dark year for many). Not only were the physical parts of me damaged, but my mental health and emotional state took a hit. On the outside I tried to stay positive, but on the inside… I was freaking out! Why you ask? Let me count the ways!

First… the pain. Mine was so bad, sometimes whatever I tried to do to alleviate it just didn’t work! Second, the workmen’s comp process was tiresome and not the best experience. Third, dealing with different doctors. Some of my doctors had so many patients it seemed like they couldn’t keep up with who was who. I also had to see different specialists with very limited time during appointments. Along the way I felt like I just wasn’t getting straight answers to my questions, just spinning my wheels.

Then came the treatments (some caused more pain) and medications. Most of the pain medication would either make me sleep for three days straight, pass out, get dizzy or sick to my stomach. None of this was great for me and my injured back. The therapists (physical, massage, acupuncture) were helpful and intuitive to my true limits. With their guidance, I was able to walk without a cane. I felt like the first piece of the puzzle was in place, but when covid shut everything down my positive progress was under attack. I felt defeated, totally exhausted, and overwhelmed.

One of my doctors suggested that I consider getting an attorney to provide additional support. At first, I was against it, but then I realized that I needed someone with experience who can advocate for the betterment of my overall recovery. Finally, when I did, part of the load was taken off me (another puzzle piece fell into place).

When my job told me they could not find a place for me because of my limitations, my attorney was on it to get me set up with someone who could walk me through vocational rehab and find the right re-training opportunity for me. Once that was set up, I had a choice between several schools. I decided to go with California State University, San Marcos. I felt comfortable with CSU San Marcos and was impressed with their flexible online programs and resources in partnership with World Education. Not only did the courses fit exactly what I was looking for, but the counselor was able to work with my provided funds, so that I was able to take an added course.

I appreciated that it was self-paced with a time reference to keep me on task. Most parts of the course were easy to navigate. The staff checked on my progress regularly and asked if I had any questions along the way. I needed this kind of support. Not only was I new to online learning, but like many, I can get distracted or overwhelmed. Some days I didn’t even feel like doing anything or I would feel like I wasn't going to finish on time. Parts of the course were short and to the point. Which meant I could do them in a short time, get an understanding and still keep on track. Once I completed the course, they helped me with my resume and apply for externships through the career counselors.

Though my puzzle is still far from complete, the pieces are starting to come together. It's slow, but progress is progress, so I will take it. Those of you that may feel you can't do it; you can, believe me.

I am proof that you most definitely can!

According to the Mental Health America website (https://mhanational.org/), mental health encompasses our emotional, psychological, and social well-being, influencing how we think, feel, and behave. It is essential to prioritize mental health and recognize its importance in maintaining a healthy and fulfilling life.

Work-related injuries can have a profound impact on mental health, exacerbating existing mental health conditions or triggering new ones. The physical pain and limitations resulting from a work-based injury can lead to feelings of frustration, helplessness, and anxiety, as individuals grapple with the challenges of coping with their injuries and navigating the recovery process. Additionally, the financial strain and uncertainty associated with being unable to work can contribute to stress and feelings of insecurity, further affecting mental health.

Furthermore, the psychological effects of a work-based injury extend beyond the individual to their interpersonal relationships and overall quality of life. Family members and loved ones may also experience heightened stress and worry as they support the injured individual through their recovery journey. Additionally, the loss of productivity and engagement in meaningful work can impact self-esteem and sense of purpose, potentially leading to feelings of isolation and depression.

In light of these challenges, it is crucial for employers and organizations to prioritize mental health support and resources for employees who have experienced work-related injuries. This may include offering access to counseling services, providing accommodations for individuals with mental health needs, and fostering a supportive and inclusive work environment. By recognizing the interconnectedness of physical and mental health and addressing both aspects comprehensively, employers can help mitigate the negative impacts of work-based injuries on mental well-being and promote a healthier and more resilient workforce.
