According to the Northern Pain Centre website (northernpaincentre.com.au), pacing aims to avoid the &quot;boom and bust&quot; cycle and minimize overdoing things on the good days (&quot;boom&quot;), which leads to underdoing things on the bad days (&quot;bust&quot;). Those with work-related injuries can quickly fall into this cycle of overdoing when they feel good, but soon those feel-good days become fewer and less often, potentially leading to more damage.</p><p style="text-align:left;"><br></p><p style="text-align:left;">Pacing may reduce flare-ups, frustration, fatigue, and reliance on medication. This means that it can have a positive effect on an injured worker’s mood and recovery. It gives the workers a chance to assess their current state and capabilities, as well as identify their limitations and areas for improvement without experiencing “booms and busts.”&nbsp; Keep in mind that pacing techniques can be applied to the classroom as well.&nbsp; World Education's flexible online training allows for participation that works on your terms, not the other way around.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p><p style="text-align:left;"><br></p><p style="text-align:left;">Ultimately, pacing fosters a more sustainable and balanced approach to rehabilitation and daily activity.&nbsp; For those navigating recovery, considering pacing can be a proactive step towards a more manageable and resilient path to healing.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p></div></div>

 class="zpheading zpheading-align-center " data-editor="true">Putting the Puzzle Pieces Back Together</h2></div>
<div data-element-id="elm_H3dn1vYOSS6DxVgm_1ZR9Q" data-element-type="text" class="zpelement zpelem-text "><style></style><div class="zptext zptext-align-center " data-editor="true"><div style="color:inherit;text-align:left;">There is no way to truly prepare for a work-related injury when it happens to you.&nbsp; Unfortunately, the bad news doesn’t end there.&nbsp; All the things that come along with it can be overwhelming, like dealing with the workman’s comp process; or the physical, mental, emotional toll a person endures along the way. Yes, there is a little booklet that gives you some helpful basic information, but it just isn't enough. Most people think, “a work injury won’t happen to me” or maybe haven’t thought about it at all. But when it does happen, your new reality becomes a jumbled puzzle that you have to put back together on your own.&nbsp; One piece at a time.&nbsp; You’ll find yourself moving pieces around to try to make them fit, without knowing what the final picture is going to look like.</div><div style="text-align:left;"><br></div><div style="text-align:left;color:inherit;">I was first injured at work in 2018 and then experienced two additional injuries in 2020 (a very dark year for many). Not only were the physical parts of me damaged, but my mental health and emotional state took a hit. On the outside I tried to stay positive, but on the inside… I was freaking out!&nbsp; Why you ask?&nbsp; Let me count the ways!</div><div style="text-align:left;"><br></div><div style="text-align:left;color:inherit;">First… the pain.&nbsp; Mine was so bad, sometimes whatever I tried to do to alleviate it just didn’t work!&nbsp; Second, the workmen’s comp process was tiresome and not the best experience.&nbsp; Third, dealing with different doctors.&nbsp; Some of my doctors had so many patients it seemed like they couldn’t keep up with who was who.&nbsp; I also had to see different specialists with very limited time during appointments.&nbsp; Along the way I felt like I just wasn’t getting straight answers to my questions, just spinning my wheels.&nbsp;</div><div style="text-align:left;"><br></div><div style="text-align:left;color:inherit;">Then came the treatments (some caused more pain) and medications. Most of the pain medication would either make me sleep for three days straight, pass out, get dizzy or sick to my stomach.&nbsp; None of this was great for me and my injured back. The therapists (physical, massage, acupuncture) were helpful and intuitive to my true limits. With their guidance, I was able to walk without a cane.&nbsp; I felt like the first piece of the puzzle was in place, but when covid shut everything down my positive progress was under attack.&nbsp; I felt defeated, totally exhausted, and overwhelmed.</div><div style="text-align:left;"><br></div><div style="text-align:left;color:inherit;">One of my doctors suggested that I consider getting an attorney to provide additional support. At first, I was against it, but then I realized that I needed someone with experience who can advocate for the betterment of my overall recovery. Finally, when I did, part of the load was taken off me (another puzzle piece fell into place).</div><div style="text-align:left;"><br></div><div style="text-align:left;color:inherit;">When my job told me they could not find a place for me because of my limitations, my attorney was on it to get me set up with someone who could walk me through vocational rehab and find the right re-training opportunity for me. Once that was set up, I had a choice between several schools. I decided to go with California State University, San Marcos. I felt comfortable with CSU San Marcos and was impressed with their flexible online programs and resources in partnership with World Education.&nbsp; Not only did the courses fit exactly what I was looking for, but the counselor was able to work with my provided funds, so that I was able to take an added course.</div><div style="text-align:left;"><br></div><div style="text-align:left;color:inherit;">I appreciated that it was self-paced with a time reference to keep me on task. Most parts of the course were easy to navigate. The staff checked on my progress regularly and asked if I had any questions along the way. I needed this kind of support. Not only was I new to online learning, but like many, I can get distracted or overwhelmed. Some days I didn’t even feel like doing anything or I would feel like I wasn't going to finish on time. Parts of the course were short and to the point. Which meant I could do them in a short time, get an understanding and still keep on track. Once I completed the course, they helped me with my resume and apply for externships through the career counselors.</div><div style="text-align:left;"><br></div><div style="text-align:left;color:inherit;">Though my puzzle is still far from complete, the pieces are starting to come together. It's slow, but progress is progress, so I will take it. Those of you that may feel you can't do it; you can, believe me.&nbsp;&nbsp;</div><div style="text-align:left;color:inherit;"><br></div><div style="text-align:left;color:inherit;">I am proof that you most definitely can!</div><div style="text-align:left;"><br></div><div style="text-align:left;color:inherit;">Atalaya Porras</div><br><div style="color:inherit;text-align:left;">&nbsp;</div></div>

According to the Mental Health America website (<a rel="noreferrer" href="https://mhanational.org/">https://mhanational.org/</a>), mental health encompasses our emotional, psychological, and social well-being, influencing how we think, feel, and behave. It is essential to prioritize mental health and recognize its importance in maintaining a healthy and fulfilling life.</p><p style="text-align:left;"><br></p><p style="text-align:left;">Work-related injuries can have a profound impact on mental health, exacerbating existing mental health conditions or triggering new ones. The physical pain and limitations resulting from a work-based injury can lead to feelings of frustration, helplessness, and anxiety, as individuals grapple with the challenges of coping with their injuries and navigating the recovery process. Additionally, the financial strain and uncertainty associated with being unable to work can contribute to stress and feelings of insecurity, further affecting mental health.</p><p style="text-align:left;"><br></p><p style="text-align:left;">Furthermore, the psychological effects of a work-based injury extend beyond the individual to their interpersonal relationships and overall quality of life. Family members and loved ones may also experience heightened stress and worry as they support the injured individual through their recovery journey. Additionally, the loss of productivity and engagement in meaningful work can impact self-esteem and sense of purpose, potentially leading to feelings of isolation and depression.</p><p style="text-align:left;"><br></p><p style="text-align:left;">In light of these challenges, it is crucial for employers and organizations to prioritize mental health support and resources for employees who have experienced work-related injuries. This may include offering access to counseling services, providing accommodations for individuals with mental health needs, and fostering a supportive and inclusive work environment. This program aims to incentivize injured workers to return to suitable employment by offering a one-time supplemental payment. The RTWSP can be a critical resource for individuals navigating the challenges of reintegration into the workforce after experiencing a disabling injury.</div><div style="color:inherit;text-align:left;"><br></div><div style="text-align:left;color:inherit;">One way the Return-to-Work Supplement Program helps injured workers is by providing them with financial support to offset the economic impact of their permanent disability. This supplemental payment serves as a form of wage replacement, helping injured workers cover their living expenses and maintain their standard of living while they transition back to work. By alleviating financial stressors, the RTWSP enables injured workers to focus on their rehabilitation and vocational retraining efforts without the added burden of financial insecurity.</div><div style="text-align:left;color:inherit;"><br></div><div style="text-align:left;color:inherit;">Moreover, the Return-to-Work Supplement Program encourages injured workers to actively engage in the vocational rehabilitation process and pursue suitable employment opportunities. The prospect of receiving a supplemental payment can motivate individuals to participate in retraining programs, skills development workshops, and job search activities to enhance their employability and secure sustainable employment. This proactive approach to return-to-work planning not only benefits the individual worker but also contributes to the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the workers' compensation system.</div><div style="text-align:left;color:inherit;"><span style="color:inherit;"><br></span></div><div style="text-align:left;color:inherit;"><span style="color:inherit;">Additionally, the RTWSP recognizes the importance of facilitating a smooth transition for injured workers back into the workforce by offering them a financial incentive to explore alternative career paths or job opportunities that accommodate their physical limitations. This flexibility allows injured workers to pursue employment options that align with their abilities, interests, and long-term career goals, fostering greater job satisfaction and career fulfillment. Ultimately, the Return-to-Work Supplement Program plays a vital role in promoting the economic security, independence, and well-being of injured workers in California.</span></div><div style="text-align:left;color:inherit;"><span style="color:inherit;"><br></span></div><div style="text-align:left;color:inherit;"><span style="color:inherit;">For more information:</span></div><div style="text-align:left;"><br></div><div style="text-align:left;color:inherit;">- [California Department of Industrial Relations - Return-to-Work Supplement Program (RTWSP)](https://www.dir.ca.gov/RTWSP/RTWSP.html)</div></div></div>

This voucher provides financial assistance for retraining or skill enhancement, allowing the injured worker to transition into a new career or occupation that accommodates their physical limitations. Essentially, it serves as a lifeline for individuals whose injuries have rendered them unable to continue in their previous line of work.</p><p style="text-align:left;">&nbsp;</p><p style="text-align:left;">One of the key benefits of the supplemental job displacement voucher is that it empowers injured workers to invest in their future by acquiring new skills or updating existing ones. This enables them to pursue alternative career paths that align with their abilities and interests, fostering greater independence and self-sufficiency. By facilitating access to education and training programs, the voucher helps injured workers overcome the barriers to reemployment and regain a sense of purpose and fulfillment.</p><p style="text-align:left;">&nbsp;</p><p style="text-align:left;">Moreover, the supplemental job displacement voucher provides financial assistance to cover the costs associated with retraining, including tuition, books, and other necessary expenses. This financial support can alleviate the financial burden on injured workers and their families, enabling them to focus on their rehabilitation and career development without worrying about the financial implications. Additionally, the voucher can be used at eligible educational institutions and training providers, ensuring that injured workers receive quality education and instruction.</p><p style="text-align:left;">&nbsp;</p><p style="text-align:left;">It's important to note that eligibility for the supplemental job displacement voucher is contingent upon certain criteria, including the extent of the worker's injury or disability and their eligibility for workers' compensation benefits. Additionally, there are specific timelines and procedures that injured workers must follow to apply for and utilize the voucher effectively. Therefore, it's advisable for injured workers to seek guidance from qualified professionals or organizations specializing in workers' compensation to navigate the process successfully.</p><p style="text-align:left;">&nbsp;</p><p style="text-align:left;">For more detailed information about the supplemental job displacement voucher in California, including eligibility requirements, application procedures, and frequently asked questions, individuals can visit the official website of the California Department of Industrial Relations or consult with a knowledgeable workers' compensation attorney or advocate. These resources can provide invaluable guidance and support to injured workers seeking to utilize the voucher to rebuild their careers and reclaim their independence following a workplace injury or illness.</p><p style="text-align:left;">&nbsp;</p><p style="text-align:left;">For more information:</p><p style="text-align:left;">- [California Department of Industrial Relations - Supplemental Job Displacement Benefit](https://www.dir.ca.gov/dwc/SJDB.htm)</p><p style="text-align:left;">- [California Division of Workers' Compensation - Vocational Rehabilitation](https://www.dir.ca.gov/dwc/vocational.htm)</p></div></div>
